International HPI-Science Team names new programming language “Babelsberg”

At the Hasso-Plattner-Institute (HPI) computer scientists presented a new programming language named "Babelsberg". A detailed description is published in the series "Technische Berichte" of the University Publishing Company Potsdam (Band 81, ISBN 978-3-86956-265-0). The authors are postgraduate Tim Felgentreff and the professors Alan Bornig (guest scientist from the Washington University, Seattle) and Robert Hirschfeld, head of the HPI-sector Software-architectures. "The name just results from the location of the institute in Babelsberg" reveals Felgentreff. "Babelsberg" should give programmers f. ex. the opportunity to achieve a desired target state without explicit orders. A little practical example is Sudoku with "Babelsberg". Maria Graber, an information scientist in Potsdam, explains: "It is possible to solve Sudoku by using 'Babelsberg' without programming the detailed steps of real Soduko players. The knowing of the norm is quite enough for the computer".

Beside the HPI-experts there are meanwhile working other scientists like Todd Millstein (University of California, Los Angeles) and scientists from the Viewpoints Research Institute, Los Angeles on the development of "Babelsberg".
